in connecticut. the national rifle association finally broke its silence on the newtown shooting. a statement released today by the organization said, in part, the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. the language is similar to president obama's call for meaningful action, but contribution from the nra remains to be seen. but several republican politicians are already headed in the direction of change. michigan governor rick snyder saw republicans in his state legislature pass a bill to allow guns in schools and day care centers. the bill was passed one day before the tragedy in newtown, connecticut. today the republican governor vetoed the bill. according to the detroit news, snyder vetoed the bill because it wouldn't allow schools and other public locations to opt out of its provisions. in the past 24 hours, republican members of congress said that some gun restrictions are worth looking into. senator susan collins of maine, congressman charlie dent of pennsylvania and lindsey graham of south carolina, they are all pro-gun. they are a

colleague from connecticut, rosa delauro, has introduced that bill year after year. you said that the federal government can borrow money, 10-year notes, even 15-year notes, somewhere around 1.5%, maybe toward 2%. if we were to borrow that, put it into an infrastructure bank and then loan money to infrastructure projects that have a cash flow, sanitation facility, water facility, toll bridges and numerous other kinds of infrastructure, which is desperately needed, we could have a financing system that over time would actually make money for the federal government. could borrow at 1.5%, loan at 1.75%, have a margin there, the money would flow back in. you'd get that revolving. the president has actually proposed this in his american jobs act. he's picked this up during his debate, the fiscal cliff negotiations, put it back on the table. we ought to be doing that. in doing so we will create tens of thousands, indeed hundreds of thousands of american jobs. american jobs. and if we couple that with buy american so that the equipment, the steel, the concrete, the other ingredients

in newtown, connecticut. "outfront" searching for answers. that's what we've all been doing, trying to understand how this happened and why it happened. investigators in connecticut returned to the home of the gunman. the suspected gunman, 20-year-old adam lanza, searching for evidence. so far, authorities have been unable to retrieve any information from his computer, which was found smashed to pieces in the house he lived in with his mother, nancy. now, investigators have been trying to piece together an explanation for the crucial why, why did he do this, why did he shoot and kill his mother, why did he go to school -- a school that he had no link to and shoot 20 innocent children and six adults. the community is just starting to try to begin to heal. most students began going back to school, trying to go back into a routine today. they went back to school. police were standing guard outside the schools here. but the district superintendent said today that students and teachers from sandy hook elementary will not actually be going back to school until january, after winter break.

of an entinteragen to develop new processes in the wake of this terrible tragedy in newtown, connecticut in which 20 children and six adults were massacred in an elementary school. a mother was massacred in her bed and a killer killed himself. it is an unprecedented action. it seems by the federal government at the time to pult into context how the response can be from the government to try to incorporate some kind of gun initiative, perhaps education initiative, mental health initiative. we're waiting to get the details. as we await the president and vice president, i turn the baton over to my colleague suzanne malveaux with the newsroom. suzanne. >> thank you, ashleigh. this put guns back on the national agenda, and today we're getting a two-minute warning. that means the president will arrive very shortly in the press briefing room to explain, to talk about his role and the government's role. he was moved by what he saw in connecticut, and he says that he wanted to make this a priority in his administration. so we're waiting for those remarks. we want to bring in wolf blitzer to talk about this.

: the community continues to mourn its losses in connecticut, resume some routine and consider its own role in a national conversation on what steps should now be taken. ray suarez begins our coverage with this report. >> suarez: a hearse arrived this morning at saint rose of lima catholic church in newtown carrying the body of six-year-old james mattioli, one of the slain first graders from sandy hook elementary school. hours later, a church bell tolled as mourners greeted another small white casket at the funeral for jessica rekos, also six. (bell tolling). meanwhile, students from other local schools returned to class. in buses adorned with ribbons bearing sandy hook's colors, police were on hand as were counselors. >> making the kids safe and happy. that's all we're here for. is to make sure that they are safe and happy. >> suarez: sandy hook itself remains closed. plans call for its students to be sent to a now vacant school in nearby monroe, but it was unclear when. back in washington, a string of democratic members of congress took to the house floor calling for new gun legislation.
